History of the X156

The X156 GLA-Class debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as Mercedes-Benz's entry into the rapidly growing compact luxury SUV segment.

Launched in 2013 with the GLA 200 and GLA 250 models, the X156 immediately resonated with urban consumers seeking premium branding without full-size SUV proportions. The platform's efficient design and modular powertrain options allowed rapid market penetration across Europe, Asia, and North America.

The 2014 introduction of the GLA 45 AMG variant brought high-performance credentials to the segment, featuring a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder producing 360 PS and distinctive AMG styling. This variant significantly enhanced the model's credibility among performance-conscious buyers and contributed substantially to overall GLA sales success.

Throughout its production run until 2020, the X156 received minor facelifts and powertrain updates, including the addition of diesel-electric hybrid options for select markets. The platform's flexibility and strong sales performance paved the way for a completely redesigned second-generation model while maintaining production of special editions.
